Accounting Today Asks: Will Musk's Layoffs Hurt the IRS's Fight Against Fraud?

Everyone is talking about the potential harm in cutting the country's revenue arm - the Internal Revenue Service.

Last week, Bloomberg Tax published an article written by our own Wilfred Castro about the return on investment of IRS Criminal Investigation special agents ($1.9 million per case working agent). But we also need to focus on the impact on tax administration in general. With these cuts—both proposed cuts and cuts that have already happened—fraudsters are rejoicing. Enforcement will be the hardest hit and fraud - both criminal and civil - will run rampant.
The IRS has already reported that tax filings are down this year for this point in the filing season - could the mixed messages and proposed cuts be to blame for this?
